The home as workplace is an important feature of the contemporary world of work. Long associated with labour-intensive, repetitive work in the industrial sector (?industrial homework?), the home as workplace also encompasses higher-skilled workers on digital labour platforms as well as remote workers (?permanent teleworkers?) in service industries. In both the North and South, homeworkers provide valuable inputs into global production models, in a range of industries, both domestic and international. During 2019, the ILO will prepare a report on homework around the world, to be published in early 2020. The report seeks to shed light on the presence and evolution of homework around the world. It will analyse how technology has facilitated the expansion of homework into new occupations and sectors, as well as its continued importance as a method of production in industrial sectors such as garment, footwear and electronics. Given the likelihood that technology will further encourage the home as workplace, it is important to understand the benefits and challenges associated with working from home as well as the regulatory strategies undertaken to advance decent work. There are few academic studies on homework since the early 2000s. This research will help to fill that gap by providing up-to-date and original analysis on homeworking in Brazil and its evolution since the early 2000s until the present. In addition to studying the use of homeworking in traditional industrial sectors such as apparel, footwear, and electronics, the study will also analyse the growth of homework in the services industry, made possible by advances in information and communication technologies (ICTs). The study aims to understand, through both a quantitative analysis and qualitative information, the profile of home-based workers, the sectors in which this type of work has grown the most, the working conditions and the reasons for the choice or need to work at home. As this type of work is historically marked by the presence of a majority of women, it is also important to consider the relationship between productive work and reproductive work in the home. The cross-referencing of these data with gender and race will allow more in-depth understanding of the segments of the Brazilian working population that seek work from home, or do so because they cannot find another alternative in a situation of economic crisis.
